Last week, I sent a couple of packets to a potential employer in Valencia, including a copy of my resume, a cover letter, and my book. I did not expect to hear back, and certainly not with the following message:

Dear Christopher,

I was most interested to see your resume and cover letter… I would like to speak with you via skype Wednesday if possible.  I believe our time difference is six hours and I could speak at your convenience tomorrow.  Please let me know what time might work for you.

I look forward to speaking with you,

Here’s the dilemma: it’s not time for me to move yet. In terms of finances, retirement, PhD progress, selling the house, bills, and other dynamics in my life right now, the answer is pretty much a no. Unless they make me an offer that I can’t refuse (who knows?), I will have to decline, but still hope to keep a relationship going with this potential employer.

Please keep me in your thoughts and prayers. I am really shocked that they contacted me back so rapidly, and even more stunned that they need someone with my qualifications right away. I just wanted to lay groundwork (and even noted in the packet that I plan to move in July 2013!) and build a connection with a potential employer.

If nothing else, this is a good boost for my “job search ego” that will need to emerge for me to seek a new job.
